The
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has reported that four of its
members have committed suicide following the withholding of September
salaries by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Speaking in Kisumu during the union?s Nyanza Regional Annual General Meeting, KNUT National Treasurer John Matiang?i said withholding the union?s deductions is further complicating the matter.
He appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and ask the TSC to pay the September salary that was withheld following the teachers? strike.
Reports indicated that some teachers are on medication and cannot afford to purchase medicine for their various ailments.
He added that teachers should not be victimised over the September?s strike, noting that the Court had ruled it legal.
The treasurer said deductions for the unions should be disbursed since it is within the law, claiming that union members have instructed their employers to make the deductions monthly.

On its part, TSC turned down the service of collecting remittances on
behalf of both KNUT and Kuppet, which depend solely on teachers?
deductions to run its operations.
Reports show that over the years, TSC has been collecting teachers? deductions directly from their salaries and channeling them to the Unions on a monthly basis
The resolution makes it difficult for the teachers? unions to get the money directly from its members, thus crippling their operations.
KNUT collects about Sh1.6 billion a year, translating to Sh135 million monthly from 206,000 teachers, while Kuppet, which has 34,000 members, collects about Sh35 million a month totalling to Sh425 million a year.
The two Unions collect about Sh2 billion annually as membership fee from 240,000 teachers across the country at the rate of two per cent of basic salary.
Figures from TSC show that that about 48,060 teachers are not attached to any union; most of them are school heads because the law does not allow them to enjoy such rights.
